In the second quarter of 2024, ZIM, the Israeli maritime shipping
company, saw a marked increase in its container throughput, handling a total of
952,000 TEUs. This represents a 10.7% rise compared to the 860,000 TEUs
recorded during the same period in 2023. This growth in volume indicates a
strong demand for ZIM’s shipping services and a solid performance in the
market. Furthermore, ZIM experienced a substantial increase in average freight
rates during this period. The rate per TEU climbed to $1,674, which is a
significant jump of 40.3% from the $1,193 per TEU average in the second quarter
of 2023. This sharp rise in freight rates reflects tighter market conditions
and possibly increased shipping costs, highlighting a broader trend of growing
revenue per container for the company. This combination of increased volume and
higher rates contributed to a favourable financial performance for ZIM in the
first half of 2024.
