Wallenius Wilhelmsen is responding to strong demand
and the need for improved operating and environmental performance by upsizing
four of its 12 new car carriers, making them the largest in the world. Set to
be built at Jinling Shipyard in China and delivered starting in 2026, these
vessels will increase capacity from 9,300 to approximately 11,700 vehicles,
marking a significant leap in the industry. The current maximum capacity for
car carriers has been around 8,500 units, but with competitors like Höegh
Autoliners and CSSC introducing their own larger models, Wallenius Wilhelmsen
aims to lead the way. The company’s new vessels will be designed with
sustainability in mind, prepared for alternative fuels like methanol and
ammonia, and equipped with features like shore power, battery systems, solar
panels, and air lubrication to enhance efficiency and reduce emissions. Xavier
Leroi, EVP & COO Shipping Services at Wallenius Wilhelmsen, expressed
confidence in the new upsized "Shaper" vessels, highlighting their
design for net-zero operations and significant fuel and emissions savings
compared to the existing fleet. With these innovations, Wallenius Wilhelmsen is
positioning itself for a sustainable future in the shipping industry.
