After Vizhinjam International Seaport Limited (VISL) and NABARD
secured an Rs 2,100 crore loan to improve road and rail links for Vizhinjam
Port, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is urgently working on
finalizing the designs for a key cloverleaf intersection where the port’s
approach road connects with NH 66. They plan to submit these designs and a
proposal for a temporary road connection to the central government within a
week. Once approved, construction will start to ensure smooth access for
container trucks. NHAI officials have completed the intersection drawings and
will soon send them to New Delhi for final approval. They are also proposing a
temporary road adjustment, including cutting the median of NH 66 south of the
approach road and installing signage to manage truck movements and speed.
Recent discussions between the state government, Adani Group, and NHAI aim to
accelerate the roadwork, with hopes to finish interim arrangements by year-end.
Although VISL has secured most of the land needed for the approach road, actual
construction hasn't started yet. Ports Minister VN Vasavan has emphasized the
urgency of temporary measures to facilitate truck traffic to and from the port.
Currently, the port is in a trial phase with commercial operations slated to
begin in October. Meanwhile, VISL has acquired nearly all the land required for
the port road, compensating landowners Rs 11 crore. The state budget, as highlighted
by Finance Minister K N Balagopal, prioritizes fast-tracking road and rail
connections to the port.
