Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal highlighted the upcoming Vadhvan
Port in Maharashtra's Palghar as a major development attracting significant
global attention. Scheduled to create 1.2 million jobs once fully operational,
this ambitious project is expected to have a transformative impact on India’s
maritime industry. Speaking at the curtain-raiser event for ‘Sagarmanthan: The
Great Oceans Dialogue,’ which will take place in Mumbai on November 18-19,
2024, Sonowal emphasized that the port, with an estimated investment of USD 10
billion, underscores India’s commitment to green and sustainable development.
The minister also reflected on recent maritime milestones, including the recent
foundation-laying of the Vadhavan Major Port by the Prime Minister on August
30. He noted that the port is not only a significant economic opportunity but
also a crucial component of India’s green transition efforts, such as the Green
Tug Transition Program, which aims to set a global example in climate action.
Sonowal further recalled the success of the Global Maritime India Summit in
2023, where India secured over USD 119 billion in investment commitments. He
urged global leaders, industry experts, and policymakers to actively
participate in ‘Sagarmanthan’ and collaborate on harnessing the vast potential
of the oceans for a more inclusive and sustainable future.
