The maritime industry is poised for a revolutionary change with the adoption of electrofuels, and ports play a crucial role in this transition. Sustainable First Mover Initiatives (SFMIs) have emerged as a concept to guide this shift, aligning with the 1.5°C Paris Agreement target while delivering multifaceted benefits. The SFMI approach underscores the necessity of considering local socio-economic and environmental factors for effective development. To aid decision-making, an SFMI identification tool has been introduced, enabling shipping stakeholders to evaluate a port's potential for electrofuel production and bunkering while ensuring positive impacts on local communities and the environment. Initial findings for the Indo-Pacific region spotlight ports like Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) in India and Chittagong port in Bangladesh as high-potential candidates for SFMIs. The tool's adaptability makes it a cornerstone for fostering sustainable port development amid the global shift away from fossil fuels.
