The Mormugao Port Authority's (MPA) proposal for a
domestic and international cruise terminal has received the green light from
the Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority (GCZMA). This project aims to offer
Ro-Ro and Ro-Pax services and is seen as a significant boost for the country. To
gain the necessary CRZ clearance for the terminal's construction at Mormugao
harbor, the MPA presented a comprehensive plan to the GCZMA. The initiative was
approved during a recent meeting, reflecting its potential benefits. The
project is estimated to cost around Rs 101.72 crore, with funding coming from
multiple sources: Rs 50.86 crore from the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and
Waterways via the Sagarmala Scheme, Rs 50 crore from the Ministry of Tourism
under the “Assistance to Central Agencies for Tourism Infrastructure
Development Scheme,” and the MPA covering the rest. Once completed, the port
will include a ropeway, quick ferry services, a commercial hub, and a Ro-Ro
facility for cars. It will also feature duty-free shops, lounges, a food court,
ample parking, waiting lounges, luggage carousels, immigration desks, check-in
counters, and dedicated spaces for passenger and baggage handling. This new
terminal is being built in response to the increasing number of cruise ships
and passengers, positioning Mormugao as a key player in the cruise industry.
