APM Terminals Maasvlakte II (MVII) is excited to
announce plans to equip its terminal with shore power starting in 2028. Also
known as cold ironing, this innovative technology will provide docked vessels
with electricity directly from the shore, allowing them to shut down their
engines while at the port. This not only reduces air pollution and greenhouse
gas emissions but also minimizes noise, creating a more pleasant environment
for both port workers and nearby communities. To facilitate this significant advancement,
APM Terminals has signed an agreement with Rotterdam Shore Power, a partnership
between the Port of Rotterdam Authority and Eneco. This collaboration aims to
develop the necessary infrastructure that will support the supply of clean,
renewable energy to vessels while they are docked. The implementation of shore
power at MVII aligns with global efforts to promote sustainability within the
maritime industry. By adopting this technology, APM Terminals is taking a
proactive step toward reducing the environmental impact of port operations and
contributing to the broader goal of greener shipping practices. This initiative
is expected to enhance the overall efficiency of terminal operations as well,
enabling vessels to power on board systems without relying on their auxiliary
engines. As MVII moves forward with this project, it underscores a commitment
to innovation and environmental responsibility in the port sector. Stay tuned
for updates as we work towards making this sustainable vision a reality.
