Singapore is boosting night-time container moves to reduce shipping delays.

Starting September 4, the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), in collaboration with PSA, other port operators, and carriers, is making a big shift in its operations to keep things running smoothly. Following a successful four-month trial, they’re officially incorporating overnight container movements on barges into their regular operations. The trial, which involved six barge operators, tested the night-time transport of container barges to and from Pasir Panjang Terminal (PPT) between 7:00 pm and 6:30 am. According to the MPA, this move is part of their ongoing effort to streamline operations, cut costs, and improve efficiency, all while keeping safety a top priority. With the trial proving successful, the overnight barge operations are now becoming a permanent fixture. This change is expected to enhance connectivity with regional ports, improve overall port efficiency, and reduce the time that container and feeder vessels spend at the berth. By utilizing the night hours for container transport, the MPA aims to minimize the need for land-based terminal transfers and keep things flowing smoothly at both the Port of Singapore and nearby ports. The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) has recently made some significant strides in improving port efficiency, particularly with the introduction of overnight barge operations.
