MSC has introduced a new weekly service connecting
Asia to the East Coast of South America, aimed at facilitating the movement of
Indian cargo from Colombo Port. This move is part of MSC Agencies (India)'s
strategy to enhance connectivity, increase service frequency, and provide
comprehensive coverage for Indian exports targeting the Latin American market.
As global importers look for alternatives to China, India is positioning itself
to capitalize on this shift. Currently, Latin American countries predominantly
import automobiles and polyethylene (PE) products from India. In response to
growing trade opportunities, Hyundai Merchant Marine has also expanded its
India-Latin America service by including a call at Kattupalli Port. This
expansion is particularly focused on cargo from western India, utilizing the
China-India string that links to JNPA (Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority) and
Mundra ports. The value of Indian exports to Latin America and the Caribbean
saw a significant increase of 19% year-on-year during the fiscal year 2022-23,
reaching approximately $22.4 billion. This growth underscores the strengthening
trade relationship and the strategic importance of Indian exports in meeting
the demands of the Latin American market.
