Seaspan's recent order for six container ships from
CSSC Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding is noteworthy not only for its size but also
because it’s being settled in Chinese RMB, diverging from the traditional
practice of using US dollars for international shipbuilding contracts. This
move may reflect a growing trend towards using local currencies in global
trade, particularly as China continues to expand its influence in the shipping
industry. This latest deal adds to Hudong-Zhonghua's impressive portfolio for
2024, bringing its total large-size containership orders this year to 15
vessels. The ships are designed with a focus on efficiency and innovation,
boasting dimensions of 336 meters in length, 51 meters in width, and 30.2
meters in depth. The expected delivery timeframe for these vessels is set
between 2026 and 2028, aligning with Seaspan’s strategy to modernize and expand
its fleet. Seaspan's relationship with Hudong-Zhonghua has grown stronger over the
years, previously ordering six 15,500 TEU large container ships in 2021,
followed by ten 7,000 TEU box ships and six 10,800 CEU PCTCs. These orders
reflect Seaspan's commitment to maintaining a competitive edge in the shipping
market, as the demand for larger and more efficient vessels continues to rise. By
working with Hudong-Zhonghua, Seaspan benefits from the shipbuilder's advanced
design capabilities and expertise, particularly in constructing large container
vessels. This partnership not only enhances Seaspan's operational capacity but
also supports the broader goals of sustainable and efficient shipping practices
in a rapidly evolving industry.
