Saudi Arabia’s Dammam port has set a new record by handling 20,645 containers on a single ship.

King Abdul-Aziz Port in Dammam has achieved a significant milestone by setting a new record for container throughput on a single vessel. The port successfully handled 20,645 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) on the COSCO SHIPPING AQUARIUS 036E, highlighting its role as a crucial hub in global trade and logistics. This record aligns with the goals of the National Transport and Logistics Strategy (NTLS), which aims to establish Saudi Arabia as a leading global logistics centre. It also reflects the efforts of the Saudi Ports Authority (Mawani) to enhance operational efficiency and maintain the port’s competitive edge. To support its growing capacity, King Abdul-Aziz Port has seen continuous infrastructure development. In 2024, the port expanded its capabilities by receiving 21 new quay cranes and RTG (rubber-tired gantry) cranes, part of a SAR7 billion investment from commercial contracts signed with Saudi Global Ports (SGP). In a push toward sustainability, the port has also secured a landmark contract with Chinese heavy equipment manufacturer SANY for 80 electric trucks. This contract is notable as the largest single agreement SANY has signed globally for electric trucks, underlining the port’s commitment to innovative and eco-friendly practices. Additionally, King Abdul-Aziz Port set a new container throughput record of 292,612 TEUs in May 2024. The port boasts 43 fully equipped berths and is linked by rail to the Riyadh dry port. It has a total handling capacity of up to 105 million tons of cargo and containers, reinforcing its status as a key gateway for goods entering the eastern and central regions of Saudi Arabia.
