The Romanian government approved negotiations with
the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) to buy Moldova's
only port, the Giurgiulesti International Free Port (GIFP), according to
official Mihai Constantin. However, Bucharest is now facing unexpected
competition from Bulgaria’s BMF Port Burgas, owned by brothers Kiril and Georgi
Domuschiev, who also own Ludogorets Razgrad, Bulgaria’s most successful
football club in recent years. Coincidentally, Ludogorets is set to play today
in Hincesti, just 170 km north of Giurgiulesti. For BMF Port Burgas, this move
is strategic, as it aims to undermine Romania’s largest port, Constanta, which
is a key competitor in the Black Sea region.
