In the Port of Rotterdam, Power2X and Advario are
teaming up to create a global hub for producing and storing synthetic,
ultra-low carbon fuels and sustainable aviation fuel (e-SAF). Their facility is
set to produce over 250,000 tonnes of e-SAF annually, which is enough to power
around 7,000 flights between Amsterdam and New York each year, making it the
largest e-SAF installation ever announced. The hub will rely on locally
produced green hydrogen and imported green methanol made from green hydrogen
and biogenic carbon. This methanol will come from regions rich in renewable
energy sources. To ensure a reliable supply chain for these green fuels,
Advario will build a modern storage and logistics facility with a capacity of
about 230,000 cubic meters, complete with rail and marine access. The Port of
Rotterdam's strategic location offers direct links to major European airports,
including Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, making it a key hub for delivering
e-fuels and sustainable aviation fuels. Since April 2023, Advario has been
working with Power2X to transform a 26-hectare site previously used by
Aluchemie into a center for innovative energy solutions. This site is
well-positioned within one of Europe’s leading energy and chemical hubs,
benefiting from waterfront access and proximity to a crucial hydrogen pipeline.
Both companies are committed to supporting green innovation and contributing to
Europe’s decarbonization goals. Sustainable aviation fuel is vital for reducing
CO2 emissions, cutting lifecycle carbon emissions by 90% compared to
traditional jet fuel. Starting in 2030, the ReFuelEU Aviation Regulation in
Europe will mandate increased use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel, including
e-SAF, with this hub expected to contribute 40% toward those goals.
