The Port of Salalah in Oman has reported an impressive 18.3% increase in general cargo volumes at its General Cargo Terminal during the first nine months of 2023, reaching 15.817 million tonnes. This growth is attributed to robust exports of minerals and petrochemicals, including limestone, gypsum, methanol, and cement, targeting nearby markets. Despite a seasonal slowdown in the third quarter due to khareef weather, the port remains on track to meet its ambitious year-end target of 20 million tonnes. However, the Container Terminal experienced a 13.4% dip in throughput due to an ongoing upgrade project aimed at accommodating Ultra Large Container Vessels (ULCVs). The completion of this upgrade in Q1 2025 is expected to attract significant container traffic, with global shipping giant Maersk committing to routing mega containerships through the Omani hub.
