Sweden’s Port of Gothenburg has officially
inaugurated Arendal 2, a substantial new terminal covering 144,000 square
meters, marking its largest expansion in four decades. The $66 million project,
completed after six years of construction, is designed to accommodate growing
cargo volumes from Swedish industries and support future operations, including
the relocation of Stena Line’s activities from the city centre to this outer
port area. The new terminal aligns with Gothenburg's strategic shift to
concentrate terminal operations in the outer port, a move expected to enhance
efficiency and capacity. Part of Arendal 2’s infrastructure will support Stena
Line's plans to incorporate sustainable fuels into its fleet, necessitating new
facilities and robust supply chains. Additionally, the expansion benefits
Gothenburg RoRo Terminal by consolidating its operations into a larger,
contiguous area, improving access to the hinterland and streamlining logistics.
Goran Eriksson, CEO of the Port of Gothenburg, highlighted that Arendal 2 not
only optimizes the port’s operations but also strengthens its competitive
position. The port has seen record-breaking container volumes, handling 914,000
TEUs last year and a 5 percent increase in the first half of 2024 compared to
the same period the previous year. With APM Terminals managing most of these
volumes, the Port of Gothenburg continues to play a critical role as
Scandinavia's largest port, handling 57 percent of Sweden’s container traffic.
