The Port of Barcelona has celebrated a significant
milestone by welcoming its first container ship, the MSC Mette, which switched
off its engines while docked, achieving a zero-emissions call. This impressive
24,000 TEU vessel was handled at Hutchison Ports’ BEST container terminal,
where it was connected to shore power. By utilizing shore power, the MSC Mette
eliminated emissions during its time in port, highlighting the port's
commitment to sustainable practices. This initiative not only contributes to
cleaner air quality in the port area but also sets a precedent for future
operations, encouraging other shipping lines to adopt similar eco-friendly
measures. The successful handling of the MSC Mette underscores the Port of
Barcelona’s dedication to becoming a leader in sustainable shipping and port
operations.
