In September , the Maersk Alette, a colossal 16,592 TEU
container ship, docked at Husky Terminal in Tacoma, making it the largest
vessel ever to call at the Northwest Seaport Alliance’s South Harbor. What’s
even more exciting is that the Maersk Alette is also the first dual-fuel ship
capable of running on green methanol to visit this gateway. Kristin Ang,
President of the Port of Tacoma Commission and Co-Chair of NWSA, expressed her
enthusiasm, saying, "Congratulations to Maersk, Nike, the Ulsan Port
Authority, and all our industry partners who are pushing for cleaner fuel
alternatives. This vessel is a clear sign of the strides we're making in
sustainable shipping technologies." The Maersk Alette is the fifth ship in
Maersk's fleet to run on green methanol, underscoring the industry’s shift
towards reducing carbon emissions. Green methanol, which can be made from
renewable sources like biomass or even wind and solar power, offers a
significant opportunity to lower the carbon footprint of shipping, according to
NWSA.
