A new terminal is set to be constructed in the Fodu
operation zone of the Liuheng port area at Ningbo-Zhoushan Port. This ambitious
project will feature two 200,000-tonne-class container berths, designed to
handle a substantial annual capacity of 2 million TEUs. The berths will be
equipped to accommodate ultra-large containerships, with a capacity of up to
24,000 TEUs, reflecting the port's commitment to adapting to the evolving
demands of global shipping. Construction for the new terminal is scheduled to
begin in October 2025, with the aim of launching operations by December 2027.
The terminal is expected to reach its full operational capacity by 2030,
further enhancing Ningbo-Zhoushan Port's capabilities. The port's management
emphasized that investing in this new terminal is crucial for meeting the
increasing transportation demands from the Yangtze River economic belt region,
which plays a vital role in China's trade and economic activities. By expanding
its container handling capacity, especially for larger vessels, Ningbo-Zhoushan
Port aims to strengthen its competitive position in the maritime industry. In
the latest figures from August, Ningbo-Zhoushan Port reported a significant
container volume of 4.32 million TEUs, reflecting a robust year-on-year
increase of 13.2%. Additionally, the port's cargo throughput is projected to
reach 97.85 million tons, representing a growth of 4.9%. These statistics
underscore the port's ongoing growth and its strategic importance in the global
shipping landscape.
