The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways is working on a new
shipbuilding scheme that will offer various incentives to Indian shipyards
until 2035. The plan aims to help India move up from its current position of
22nd in global shipbuilding to the top 10 by 2030, and eventually into the top
5 by 2047. It’s an ambitious strategy designed to boost the industry and
enhance India’s global standing in shipbuilding. Global cruise leader MSC
Cruises, headquartered in Geneva, has shown interest in deploying their ships
for domestic routes within India. To support this and further enhance the
maritime sector, the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW), in
collaboration with the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, is planning a
joint venture. This venture will involve the Shipping Corporation of India
(SCI) and oil marketing companies to acquire large tankers. Additionally, the
Ministry will offer financial assistance to promote greener technologies. Ships
using green fuels like methanol, ammonia, hydrogen, and fuel cells will receive
around 30% financial support. For vessels equipped with fully electric or hybrid
propulsion systems, the assistance will be 20%. These steps are part of a
broader effort to modernize India's shipping industry and boost its
environmental sustainability.
