The planned completion of National Waterway 5
(NW-5) is set to significantly enhance connectivity by linking Talcher with two
major ports in Odisha, Paradip and Dhamra. This ambitious project is aimed at
developing inland waterways, fostering efficient and sustainable transportation
in the region. The initiative is spearheaded by the Inland Waterways Authority
of India (IWAI) in collaboration with the Odisha government. IIT Madras, in
partnership with the IWAI, is working on a comprehensive master plan for NW-5,
with the Odisha government expected to finalize the design shortly. NW-5 is
notable for being one of India’s six officially recognized national waterways,
stretching a total of 623 kilometres, with 532 kilometres running through Odisha
and 91 kilometres into West Bengal. The waterway will primarily traverse
Mangalajodi, establishing a vital link between Talcher and Dhamra. There are
plans to extend the route further from Dhamra to Haldia, thereby expanding the
network of inland waterways along the eastern coast of India. This expansion is
particularly important for Odisha, which boasts a 480-kilometer coastline and
is actively working on a comprehensive action plan to promote port-based inland
water transportation and maritime logistics. The development of NW-5 represents
a crucial step in unlocking the economic potential of Odisha's waterways. By
improving logistical infrastructure, the project aims to boost trade and
commerce, enhance regional connectivity, and position Odisha as a key
industrial and transport hub in India. Ultimately, this initiative is expected
to drive economic growth and improve the overall efficiency of transportation
in the state, benefiting various sectors and local communities.
