Mitsubishi Heavy Industries held a christening and handover ceremony for the liquefied CO2 transportation demonstration test ship, named "EXCOOL," at its Shimonoseki Shipyard. The vessel, completed on November 28, 2023, will transport liquefied CO2 for various CCUS projects conducted by NEDO. "EXCOOL" aims to establish technology for large-volume and long-distance marine transport of liquefied CO2, crucial for Japan's Carbon Dioxide Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) project. The use of vessels is seen as an efficient means to transport CO2, and the project focuses on optimizing technology for safe, environmentally friendly, and economically efficient CO2 marine transport. The roles of participating companies include ENAA's research and development, Ochanomizu University's basic research, "K" LINE's risk assessment and operation manual preparation, and Nippon Gas Line's data measurement and method development. The demonstration project seeks to contribute to the realization of a carbon-neutral society.
