On August
1, 2024, Maryland briefly closed the Chesapeake Bay Bridge after a former
Military Sealift Command vessel named Denebola lost its steering while it was
heading for recycle in Texas. The 946 foot cargo ship had just left Baltimore
and ran into trouble before reaching the bridge. The authorities suspended
traffic for about 15 minutes as a precaution while the Coast Guard quickly
fixed this issue. The ship was soon back on its way, but the incident brought
back the memories of past bridge closure, like the one involving the Dali
earlier in the year.
