Malaysia to Expand Three-Day Cargo Container Release Policy to All Federal Ports

The Ministry of Transport (MOT) in Malaysia has announced plans to extend the existing practice of releasing cargo containers to traders within three days, initially piloted at Port Klang, to all federal ports from the beginning of next year. The move aims to prevent prolonged detention of containers by government agencies and permit-issuing bodies, reducing losses for traders and enhancing the competitiveness and productivity of the country's ports. Port Klang, the world's 12th largest container port, experienced a notable increase, with 92% of containers released within three days since the implementation of the standard operating procedure (SOP). The initiative is part of efforts to stay competitive amid rising regional competition along the busy Strait of Malacca.
