Malaysia Expands Efficient Container Release Policy to Boost Port Competitiveness

The Ministry of Transport in Malaysia announced the expansion of a successful pilot project from Port Klang to all federal ports, implementing a three-day maximum for the release of cargo containers to traders. The move aims to prevent significant losses caused by prolonged detention of containers by government agencies, enhancing the country's port competitiveness and productivity. Since the introduction of the standards of procedure (SOP) in May 2022, Port Klang has experienced a substantial increase, with 92% of containers released within three days by OGAs or PIAs. The initiative comes amid efforts to improve Malaysia's port operations, especially considering heightened regional competition along the busy Strait of Malacca shipping route.
