The government of Maharashtra has begun engaging in detailed
discussions with the fishing community and local residents in Dahanu, Palghar,
and surrounding areas regarding the development of the Vadhavan Port, a major
₹76,220 Crore project. This port, which received approval from the union
cabinet in June, is set to advance without delays. Chief Minister Eknath Shinde
has reassured stakeholders that the development will proceed smoothly, with
ongoing efforts to address any concerns from the community and ensure that
their interests are adequately considered. Chief Minister Shinde emphasized
that the interests of the fishing community and local residents will be a top
priority in the Vadhavan Port development. He has instructed the port
authorities to hold meetings and engage in dialogue to address the concerns of
the fishing industry and local population. Shinde assured that from start to
finish, their needs will be safeguarded, with efforts to prevent any losses and
find positive, practical solutions to any issues that arise. The Vadhavan Port
development will be managed by Vadhavan Port Project Limited (VPPL), a Special
Purpose Vehicle (SPV) formed specifically for this project. VPPL is a
collaboration between the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA), which holds a
74% stake, and the Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB), with a 26% stake. The port
will be an all-weather, Greenfield deep draft major port, designed to handle
large vessels year-round. The total investment for the project is ₹76,220
Crore, which includes costs for land acquisition, infrastructure development,
and commercial facilities. The development will be carried out through a
public-private partnership (PPP) model, focusing on building core
infrastructure and terminals to support robust trade and commerce. The port will comprise nine container terminals,
each 1,000 meters long, and four multipurpose berths including a coastal berth,
four liquid cargo berths, a Ro-Ro berth, and a Coast Guard berth.
