Maersk, is set to invest nearly $2 billion in
Pakistan’s maritime sector following the signing of a Memorandum of
Understanding between Danish Minister for Industry, Business, and Financial Affairs,
H.E. Morten Bodskov, and Pakistani Minister for Maritime Affairs, Qaiser Ahmed
Shaikh. During the signing ceremony, Denmark’s Ambassador to Pakistan, Jacob
Linulf, presented the signed document. Minister Shaikh expressed his gratitude
to the Danish government for this significant breakthrough in the maritime
sector. He noted that this investment will enable the integration of logistics
hubs at all ports, the establishment of deep-water container terminals in
Karachi, the creation of ship recycling facilities in Gaddani that meet
International Maritime Organization (IMO) and European Union (EU) standards,
and enhancements to the curriculum and equipment at the Pakistan Marine
Academy, along with ongoing technical and training support for local ports. Minister
Shaikh emphasized Maersk's critical role in Pakistan’s shipping industry,
pointing out that the company holds a commanding 20% market share in
containerized imports and exports in the country. He also highlighted that
Maersk has a global market capital of around 175 billion Danish Krone. The
minister noted that both the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and the Danish
government have been collaborating for the past six months to achieve this
fruitful partnership, reflecting their mutual commitment to strengthening ties
and advancing the maritime sector in Pakistan.
