The Kerala Maritime Board has officially submitted
a proposal to the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways for the
development of a multi-purpose berth at Ponnani Port, a non-major port located
in the Malappuram district of Kerala. This ambitious project, which has an
estimated cost of Rs 20 Crore, is seeking partial financial assistance through
the central government's Sagarmala Scheme. Union Minister of Ports, Shipping,
and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, conveyed this information in a detailed
written response to the Lok Sabha. In his statement, he underscored the central
government’s dedication to supporting state-led infrastructure initiatives that
are in alignment with national maritime strategies. Ponnani Port plays a
significant role in regional connectivity and economic development. The Kerala
government recognizes its potential not only for enhancing local trade but also
for fostering cruise tourism. To this end, they are looking to advance the
port’s capabilities through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. This
approach aims to attract private sector investment and expertise to expand and
modernize the port's facilities. In addition to the proposed berth, the Kerala
government has issued an Expression of Interest (EoI) to invite private service
providers to initiate cruise shipping services. This initiative is intended to
establish connectivity between various non-major ports in Kerala and ports in
neighbouring states, thereby boosting regional maritime activity and tourism.
The proposal is well-aligned with the Sagarmala Scheme’s objectives, which
focus on modernizing India’s port infrastructure, enhancing port connectivity,
and promoting economic development through port-led growth. If the project
receives approval and the necessary funding, it will mark a significant
advancement in Kerala’s maritime infrastructure, contribute to regional
economic development, and further the goals of the Sagarmala Scheme. The
successful implementation of this project is expected to have a substantial
positive impact on the state’s economic landscape and its maritime
capabilities.
