Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) is riding high after
recording its highest ever monthly container traffic. In August 2024, the port
handled a remarkable 639,336 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), marking a
15.14 percent increase from the same month last year. This impressive number
surpassed the previous record set in July 2024, which saw 603,217 TEUs, reflecting
a near 6 percent month-on-month rise. This growth is largely driven by a robust
19.22 percent increase in annual exports. Last month alone, JNPA managed 7.89
million metric tonnes of total cargo, up 7.62 percent year-on-year. Between
April and August 2024, the port handled 37.42 million metric tonnes of cargo,
showing a 6.20 percent increase compared to the previous year. Both of JNPA’s
major terminals, Bharat Mumbai Container Terminal (BMCT) and APM Terminals,
also hit new highs. BMCT processed 202,071 TEUs, while APM Terminals handled
192,137 TEUs, marking their highest monthly volumes ever. JNPA’s success
highlights its efficient operations and commitment to international standards.
The port’s focus on providing comprehensive, sustainable logistics solutions
aims to enhance the export-import experience. Currently, JNPA has a container
handling capacity of 7.4 million TEUs, with plans to expand to 10 million TEUs
in the near future. Additionally, JNPA is developing an ambitious Greenfield
port at Vadhvan in Maharashtra, with a projected cost of Rs 76,220 crore. This
port, set to become one of the top 10 globally, is designed to be fully green
and sustainable.
