Jawaharlal Nehru Port has reported a 16.49% growth
in container traffic, handling 596,790 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) in
September compared to the same month last year. The port, which is the
country’s premier container hub, managed a total of 512,316 TEUs in September 2023,
according to the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA). In addition to
container traffic, the port's total traffic reached 7.38 million tons last
month, marking a 6.14% increase from the 6.95 million tons handled in September
of the previous year. During September 2024, JNPA processed 569 container rakes
and 91,088 TEUs, up from 535 rakes and 84,408 TEUs in the same period last
year. JNPA attributes this consistent growth to the efficient operation of its
terminals, which meet international standards. Currently, the port operates
five container terminals—NSFT, NSICT, NSIGT, BMCT, and APMT. It also features a
shallow water berth for general cargo and a liquid cargo terminal managed by
the BPCL-IOCL consortium. Additionally, a newly constructed coastal berth
connects with other Indian ports, further enhancing the traffic of coastal
containers.
