India is gearing up to establish two operational
Mega shipbuilding parks by 2030, aiming to tap into the $100 billion global
shipbuilding market, according to Sarbananda Sonowal, the minister for ports,
shipping, and waterways. He outlined that the immediate objective is to create
four Mega shipbuilding parks, with two set to be developed on the East Coast
and two on the West Coast of India. States such as Gujarat, Maharashtra,
Odisha, and Andhra Pradesh are showing promising progress in this initiative, demonstrating
their commitment to support these projects. Sonowal highlighted that these
states have reiterated their plans during discussions at the 20th Maritime
State conference, signalling strong local backing for the venture. The
establishment of these parks is expected to enhance India’s shipbuilding
capacity, create jobs, and boost the economy, while also positioning the
country as a significant player in the global maritime industry. With the
strategic development of infrastructure and favourable policies, India aims to
attract both domestic and international investments in shipbuilding, ultimately
fostering innovation and growth in this crucial sector.
