Port of Los Angeles handled an impressive 960,597
Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units (TEUs) in August, marking a 16% increase from the
previous year and making it the busiest month at the Port outside of the
pandemic. So far in 2024, the Port is 17% ahead of its 2023 pace, already
processing nearly a million more containers than last year. Port Executive
Director Gene Seroka noted that strong consumer spending is fueling this
growth, with cargo arriving not just for the upcoming holiday season but also
to replenish inventories. He expressed gratitude to the dedicated waterfront
workers and terminal operators for managing this surge safely and efficiently. During
a media briefing, George Goldman, President and CEO of CMA CGM North America,
joined Seroka to discuss the factors driving this increased volume at U.S. ports.
In August alone, loaded imports reached 509,363 TEUs, an 18% rise from last
year, while loaded exports dipped slightly to 121,744 TEUs. The Port also
processed 329,491 empty containers, a notable 22% increase compared to 2023.
Overall, the Port has moved 6,631,688 TEUs in the first eight months of 2024,
reflecting a significant 17% growth from the previous year.
