HMM is buying five new container vessels to expand its fleet.

HMM is moving forward with the purchase of five 5,000 TEU container ships that it has been chartering from Capital Clean Energy Carriers Corporation (CCECC). CCECC recently announced the sale of these vessels—Hyundai Paramount, Hyundai Platinum, Hyundai Premium, Hyundai Prestige, and Hyundai Privilege—but did not disclose the sale price, although it anticipates a gain of $118.4 million since the attached loans have been repaid. This acquisition is part of HMM's broader plan to expand its fleet by 1.55 million TEUs by 2030, backed by a $16 billion investment scheme. Earlier this month, HMM also confirmed it is in talks to buy three older feeder vessels. The company has been chartering these ships since their delivery in 2013, initially at a rate of $28,616 per day. After facing financial difficulties in 2016, HMM successfully renegotiated the charter rates down to $23,010 per day. In January 2020, the charters were renewed for another five years and two months at the original rate. Each vessel is estimated to be worth about $57 million, but HMM is likely securing a competitive price. Recently, other major shipping operators like MSC and Yang Ming have also been acquiring chartered ships to grow their owned fleets amid rising charter costs. CCECC explained that selling these container ships aligns with its strategy to shift focus toward gas transportation, though the company still operates three 13,000 TEU vessels in the container shipping sector. The rising value of container ships has enabled CCECC to create value for its shareholders through this sale.
