German shipping company Hapag-Lloyd has announced surcharges for cargo traveling to and from the Middle East due to recent attacks on merchant ships in the Red Sea. The "peak seasonal surcharge" applies to containers from Asia and Oceania to the Red Sea region, while containers in the opposite direction will face an "operational recovery surcharge." Starting January 22, this surcharge will extend to cargo traveling between India and the Middle East to North America. The surcharges, ranging from $250 to $1,000, aim to address the uncertainty created by the situation in the Red Sea. Maersk and CMA CGM have also implemented extra charges in response to concerns about disruptions to global trade caused by attacks from Yemen's Houthi militant group.
