Puerto’s del Estado has published detailed
container traffic statistics for Spanish ports covering January to August 2024.
During this period, total TEU traffic reached 12.1 million, marking an
impressive 11.6% increase compared to the same timeframe last year. This growth
reflects a consistent upward trend in container handling that has been evident
since the beginning of the year, driven by robust demand in various sectors. Breaking
it down further, the increase in TEUs in transit was recorded at 17.8%. While
this is still a significant rise, it is slightly lower than the higher growth
rates seen in previous months, suggesting that the dynamics of transit traffic
may be shifting. This could be due to various factors, such as changes in trade
routes, adjustments in shipping schedules, or broader economic influences
impacting logistics. Overall, the data underscores the resilience of Spanish
ports in adapting to the evolving landscape of global trade, as they continue
to handle increasing volumes despite the challenges faced in the maritime
industry.
