In 2024, Colombo Port demonstrated impressive
growth by handling a total of 5,023,632 TEUs, which represents a significant
9.6% increase from the 4,584,843 TEUs recorded during the same period in 2023.
This substantial rise underscores the port's enhanced efficiency and capacity.
Breaking it down further, South Asia Gateway Terminals (SAGT) handled 1,281,642
TEUs this year, marking a noteworthy 10.4% increase compared to last year's
figures. This growth reflects SAGT’s expanding role and operational
capabilities within the port. Colombo International Container Terminals (CICT)
also contributed to the overall growth, with a 5% increase in container
throughput, reaching 2,200,956 TEUs. Although the growth rate at CICT was
slightly lower compared to SAGT, it still highlights a positive trend in their
operational performance. The combined performance of these terminals, along
with the overall increase, suggests that Colombo Port is on track to surpass
its previous records if the current trend continues. This solid performance not
only emphasizes Colombo’s critical role in regional trade but also positions it
as a key player in global maritime logistics. According to the Sri Lanka Ports
Authority (SLPA), the ongoing growth trajectory is expected to further
reinforce Colombo’s status as a vital maritime hub in the region.
