Cochin Shipyard Ltd (CSL), recognized as India's
leading shipbuilder, is making significant strides in the maritime industry by
focusing on the construction of modern vessels powered by green energy. The
shipyard is poised to deliver an impressive total of 65 ships, valued at over
₹22,000 crore, to a diverse range of clients, including the Indian Navy and
several international partners. Chairman and Managing Director Madhu S. Nair
emphasized that this initiative aligns with global efforts to combat carbon
emissions and address climate change. As concerns over environmental impacts
grow, there is a notable shift towards building "green ships"—vessels
designed to operate on less-polluting fuels such as methanol, electricity,
green hydrogen, and hybrid batteries. CSL's order book has reached an all-time
high, featuring contracts for 65 vessels. Among these, a substantial portion
includes 14 naval ships and 22 coastal vessels intended for European clients
from countries like Germany, Norway, Cyprus, and the Netherlands. This robust
portfolio not only showcases CSL's capabilities but also highlights its
commitment to meeting the evolving demands of the global shipping market. In
addition to conventional shipbuilding, CSL is already fulfilling international
orders for cutting-edge vessels, including hydrogen fuel cell ships,
methanol-powered ships, and electric vessels. The shipyard is also involved in
creating sophisticated commissioning and support operations vessels (CSOV) for
clients based in the UK, Germany, and Cyprus. Through this focus on innovation
and sustainability, Cochin Shipyard is positioning itself at the forefront of
the green shipping revolution, contributing to a more sustainable future for
the maritime industry while maintaining its strong reputation for quality and
reliability.
