Thordon Bearings and Wärtsilä have collaborated to launch the Blue Ocean Alliance, an initiative focused on developing and promoting a groundbreaking sterntube-less ship concept. This innovative ship design eliminates the need for oil-lubricated sterntube seals and bearings, potentially saving ship owners significant capital and operational expenses. The concept, named T-BOSS (Thordon-Blue Ocean Stern Space), employs Thordon's seawater-lubricated COMPAC propeller shaft bearing system and Wärtsilä's Enviroguard Seal, allowing in-water maintenance without withdrawing the propeller shaft. The Blue Ocean Alliance includes partners such as SDARI, NTUA, and ABS, with ABS already granting Approval in Principle for the sterntube-less vessel concept. The design is expected to simplify maintenance, reduce operational costs, and contribute to environmental sustainability by eliminating propeller shaft oil emissions.
