Pakistan Joins International Efforts for Safe Ship Recycling

Pakistan, represented by Vice Admiral (Retd.) Iftikhar Ahmad Rao, Maritime Minister and Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Maritime Affairs, has officially become a party to the Hong Kong International Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships, 2009. The instrument of accession was deposited at the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Headquarters in London on November 30, following a national seminar in Karachi to support the convention's implementation. The Hong Kong Convention, set to enter into force on June 26, 2025, aims to ensure environmentally friendly and safe ship recycling, addressing various aspects from shipowners to recycling facilities. Pakistan joins a growing list of contracting parties committed to responsible ship recycling practices.
