Anti-narcotics office opened in Marseille port.

The French anti-drug office, OFAST (L’office anti-stupéfiants), has taken a significant step in combating maritime drug trafficking by establishing a new branch at the Port of Marseille. This dedicated unit, comprising nine officers, is designed to enhance operational effectiveness in monitoring and intercepting drug shipments at one of France’s busiest ports. This initiative follows two major cocaine seizures in August, where authorities intercepted over 90 kg of the drug concealed within two separate container shipments. These incidents underscored the increasing sophistication of drug trafficking networks utilizing maritime routes to transport illicit substances into Europe. The new branch will focus on improving intelligence sharing, enhancing surveillance capabilities, and conducting targeted operations aimed at disrupting trafficking routes. By concentrating resources in a strategic location like Marseille— a key entry point for international shipping—OFAST aims to bolster its efforts against the rising tide of maritime drug smuggling. This is the second OFAST branch dedicated to specialized operations, reflecting a broader commitment to adapting law enforcement strategies to the evolving landscape of drug trafficking. With this new team in place, the French authorities are better equipped to address the complexities of maritime crime and ensure the safety of communities affected by drug trafficking.
