India is actively working to enhance its global
maritime presence by developing two additional ports in Bangladesh and Sri
Lanka, as announced by Sarbananda Sonowal, the Minister for Ports, Shipping,
and Waterways. During a recent briefing on the achievements of the ministry in
the first 100 days of the new NDA government, Sonowal highlighted several key
initiatives aimed at expanding India’s influence in the region. One of the
major projects will involve Indian Ports Global Limited (IPGL), a wholly owned
subsidiary of the Sagarmala Development Company Limited under the ministry,
which is set to develop Mongla Port in Bangladesh. As the country’s
second-largest and busiest port, Mongla is crucial for facilitating trade and
economic activities. The development of this port is expected to strengthen
bilateral trade ties between India and Bangladesh while boosting regional
connectivity. In addition to the project in Bangladesh, India is also exploring
terminal development opportunities at Kankesanturai, located near Jaffna in Sri
Lanka. Sonowal mentioned that the initiative aligns with India’s broader
strategy to improve maritime infrastructure in the Indian Ocean region.
Notably, a new international ferry service connecting Nagapattinam in Tamil
Nadu to Kankesanturai has already been launched, further enhancing
transportation links and promoting trade between the two countries. These
developments signify India’s commitment to fostering closer maritime
relationships with its neighbours while supporting regional economic growth and
stability. By investing in port infrastructure in Bangladesh and Sri Lanka,
India aims to bolster its maritime capabilities and secure its position as a
key player in the Indian Ocean region.
