The Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port in Kolkata, formerly known as Kolkata Port Trust, is set to enhance its cargo handling capacity and mechanization efforts through a series of public-private partnership (PPP) projects. With three ongoing projects focused on liquid cargo, containerized traffic, and dry bulk cargo, totaling over ₹700 crore, the port aims to increase its overall capacity by 30 million tonnes in the next seven years. The ambitious plan includes a total of 12 PPP projects, with three already awarded and more expected to be granted by March next year, at an estimated cost of ₹5,214 crore. The port has experienced substantial growth, handling 65.66 million tonnes in the financial year 2022-23, elevating its rank to fifth among major ports in cargo handling.
