India's government is making progress in the development of the International Container Transshipment Port (ICTP) at Galathea Bay, Great Nicobar Island, as part of its Amrit Kaal Vision 2047 maritime development initiative. Envisioned as a strategic project with an estimated cost exceeding $5 billion, the terminal aims to become a key transshipment hub due to its strategic location on the Colombo-Singapore route. The project recently received environmental and forest clearances, with "In-Principle" approval from the Ministry of Finance. The first phase's construction tenders are expected to be announced in early 2024, and the terminal is planned to have a capacity of 16 million TEUs per year at full buildout. However, concerns about environmental impact and conservation have been raised by activists and scientists due to the unique ecological features of the Great Nicobar Island.
