The ongoing heavy rains in Kenya's coastal region, attributed to the El Nino phenomenon, have severely impacted the country's railways operations. Kenya Railways has announced disruptions in the evacuation of cargo from the Port of Mombasa to the inland container depot in Nairobi. Landslides and wash-aways along the 300-mile Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) corridor between Mombasa and Nairobi have led to the closure of a section, affecting normal train operations, cargo transfers, and loading activities. The SGR cargo freight service, vital for transporting containerized cargo to dry ports in Nairobi and Naivasha, has experienced a significant increase in cargo evacuation from 2.9 million tons in 2018 to over 6 million tons last year. The heavy rains have also caused widespread flooding, displacing numerous people and resulting in approximately fifty reported deaths.
