The port of Mombasa is managed by the Kenya Ports Authority (K.P.A) It is strategically placed to serve countries across the whole of East and Central Africa including: Rwanda, Burundi, Zaire, Uganda, Southern Somalia, Democratic Republic of Congo, Southern Sudan, Southern Ethiopia and Tanzania
Mombasa port is located and marked by a fair buoy at Latitude 4 degrees 4 minutes’ south Longitude 39 degrees 40 minutes east facing the Indian Ocean.

Anchorage Area

There are no anchoring ground at Mombasa roads. Anchoring is strictly prohibited at the entrance about 1.5 miles S.E. of Ras - Serani.

There are a dozen good anchoring grounds and buoys within the harbour inside the port area, as outlined below:

Pilot boarding

Pilot is compulsory; this is provided by the K.P.A and arranged through
the vessel’s’ agent.

Pilot will board the vessel at 1 mile S.E of buoy No.2. For larger vessels,
the pilot will board 2-3 miles out.

Usage of tugs and mooring boats is compulsory when required by the pilot.

Stevedoring Working Hrs

The Port of Mombasa works SSHINC in 24 running hours, 7 days a week in three shifts as shown below. There is a 15 minutes meal break between shifts.

Mombasa Port is a natural harbour and is endowed with deep natural berths as follows:

DISCHARGE / LOADING RATES

General cargo port’s customary discharge rate is about 120Mts per gang per shift SSHINC (Saturdays, Sundays and Holidays Included) but can be doubled up to between 250mt - 300mt PWWD (Per Weather Working Day) SSHINC with extra labour at a cost.

Bulk grain at the grain handling facility is between 7000 - 10000 Mt PWWD (Per Weather
Working Day), basis 2 working lines / conveyors.

Bulk Soda ash is loaded via two conveyor belts each with a given loading rate of 100 MTS per hour, PWWD (Per Weather Working Day); all soda ash loading vessels must arrive fully ballasted

Bulk fertilizer or grains discharged at other conventional berths is between 2500 Mt to 3000 Mt PWWD (Per Weather Working Day) but can be improved to about 4500 Mt PWWD (Per Weather Working Day) by employing extra labour basis 4 working hooks throughout

Discharge of Bulk Ore and Clinker is by grabs at port’s customary discharge rate of 5,000Mt
PWWD (Per Weather Working Day)

Mineral Sand is loaded at Base Titanium Likoni Port facility at a load rate of about 800Mt per hour PWWD (Per Weather Working Day)

Steel products are discharged on direct delivery basis at the conventional berth at a port’s
customary discharge rate of 250Mt per gang per shift PWWD (Per Weather Working Day)
